I just picked up my law school diploma.  It turns out that after my grades were calculated, I graduated Cum Laude.  They didn't announce it at graduation because the grades hadn't been calculated yet.  Regardless of not being publicly honored for this, I'm really, really pleased.

The Oracle
33% Extroversion, 100% Intuition, 16% Emotiveness, 52% Perceptiveness
Heuristic, detached, and analytical to a fualt, you are most like The Oracle. You are able to tackle any subject with a fine toothed comb, and you possess an ability to pinpoint nuances and shades of meaning that other people do not have and cannot understand. Accomplishment and realization of ideas are, for you, secondary to the rigorous exploration of ideas and questions -- you are, first and foremost, a theorist. You hate authority, convention, tradition, and under no circumstances do you accept a leadership role (although, you will gladly advise leadership when they're going astray, whether they want you to or not). Abstraction and generalities are your interests, details and particulars are usually inconsequential and uninteresting. You excel at language, mathematics and philosophy.

You are typically easy-going and non-confrontational until someone violates one of the very few principles that you deem sacred, at which point you can fly into a rage. Although you possess a much greater understanding of process and systems than the people around you, you are always conscious of the possibility that you've missed something or made a mistake. You don't tend to become attached to particular theories, and will immediately discard mistaken notions once they're revealed to be incorrect (but you don't tolerate iconoclasts who try to discredit validated theories through the use of fallacies and bad data). Despite being outwardly humble, you probably think of yourself as being smarter than most other people. That's because you are. In fact, in your dealings with people your understanding of their motives is so expansive that you know what they're going to say before they say it, and in world affairs, you usually know what is going to take place before it actually does. This ability would make you unbeatable in debates if only you were a little less pensive about your own conclusions, and a little more outgoing.

Famous people like you: Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin, Adam Smith, Thomas Jefferson, John McWhorter, Ramanujan, Marie Curie, Kurt Godel
Stay clear of: Apollo, Icarus, Hermes, Aphrodite
Seek out: Atlas, Prometheus, Daedalus

You scored as XI: Justice. The blindfold arbiter weighs the evidence and passes judgement without fear or favour. There can be no appeal.Justice is not necessarily the same as Law. True justice seeks out the spirit of the law, not just its letter. If a law is bad then true Justice will set that law aside. This is the sacred responsibility of those given the power to judge. If well aspected in a Tarot reading, this card can indicate settlement of disputes, the achievement of a just outcome. If badly aspected this card can indicate corruption and failure of justice.

I've found this poem to be very enjoyable lately.  I read it the other day in my Byron anthology and thought I'd share it with you all.  It's a famous poem he had inscribed on his dog Boatswain's monument.  The subjects are quite true and the work itself is beautiful.  It couldn't have been better said.

Inscription on the Monument of a Newfoundland Dog

When some proud son of man returns to earth,
Unknown to glory, but upheld by birth,
The sculptor's art exhausts the pomp of woe
And storied urns record who rest below:
When all is done, upon the tomb is seen,
Not what he was, but what he should have been:
But the poor dog, in life the firmest friend,
The first to welcome, foremost to defend,
Whose honest heart is still his master's own,
Who labours, fights, lives, breathes for him alone,
Unhonour'd falls, unnoticed all his worth--
Denied in heaven the soul he held on earth:
While Man, vain insect! hopes to be forgiven,
And claims himself a sole exclusive Heaven.
Oh Man! thou feeble tenant of an hour,
Debased by slavery, or corrupt by power,
Who knows thee well must quit thee with disgust,
Degraded mass of animated dust!
Thy love is lust, thy friendship all a cheat,
Thy smiles hypocrisy, thy words deceit!
By nature vile, ennobled but by name,
Each kindred brute might bid thee blush for shame.
Ye! who perchance behold this simple urn,
Pass on--it honours none you wish to mourn:
To mark a Friend's remains these stones arise;
I never knew but one,--and here he lies.

Newstead Abbey, October 30, 1808.

Preceding the verse it is written:

"Near this spot
Are deposited the Remains of one
Who possessed Beauty without Vanity,
Strength without Insolence,
Courage without Ferocity,
And all the Virtues of Man without his Vices.
This Praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery
If inscribed over human ashes,
Is but a just tribute to the Memory of
BOATSWAIN, a Dog,
Who was born at Newfoundland, May, 1803,
And died at Newstead Abbey, Nov. 18, 1808."

Bar exam review is going alright.  I'm so tired at the end of the day that I nearly collapse but I'm remembering all the fine points of law that I was taught 3 years ago.

I lost an inch off my waist!  My suits are starting to fit really nice again.  I'm going to invest in nicotine patches after I take the bar.  I don't want to have all this work cut short because of a bad habit.

This conversation with absynthe666 is an example of the crazy conversations we've had lately!  We met up for lunch yesterday at a cafe near where both I go to my class and where she lives.  I used to live in the same area growing up.  She works on art and I study.  Then we work on what I call a "creative project."  Yesterday, we wrote historic letters to famous modern people.  I covered property law in class yesterday.  Four hours of life estates, real estate transactions, and real estate financing.

A guy that I went to high school with is in my bar review class.  It's strange running into people you knew a good number of years ago.

Per [info]enodia's request that people post this in their journal for purposes of public awareness, I'm doing this because I agree with it wholeheartedly.  Speaking as a dog-owner for almost my entire life, it angers me that some legislators want to outlaw the pit bull breed (in this case, legislators in the State of California).  Why not go after the owners instead?  I suppose it wouldn't be as dramatic of a platform to stand on.

My parents and I got our furry little son from a rescue agency a few years ago.  They warned us that he was "bad around people" and it was completely untrue.  He had separation anxiety for a few months because he was shifted to many homes.  After a few months of kindness, he acts like any other dog.  Snap judgements people make about certain animals are often groundless (as is the case with this proposed legislation).

6 strange facts/habits meme [May. 27th, 2006|12:30 am]

[Current Music |Strangeways, Here We Come - The Smiths]

Given that I was tagged by [info]kennit

6 weird facts/things/habits about you. Tag 6 others, and no tag backs

1.  I have double-jointed thumbs.  I can bend them all the way back and pop them out of joint.

2.  My hair used to be poker straight.  My hair began curling in my teenage years.

3.  I sometimes smoke a pipe.

4.  I used to weigh close to 300 pounds.  Two and a half years of a better diet and exercise fixed it.  I went from a 46 inch waist to a 34/32 inch waist.

5.  I'm the last male in my bloodline.

6.  I've always been fond of wearing fine clothes.  Fine pinstripe suits, leather coats, brocaded vests, overcoats, bowlers, ascots, dressing gowns, etc.  I also enjoy dressing like a dandy.  Then again, I also dress casually.

A few more that I felt like adding:

I think stargazer lilies are as beautiful as roses.
I have four names.
I don't usually trust people who dislike animals.
I don't mind speaking before a large crowd but I feel uneasy being in a large crowd.
I spend more time reading books than watching television.
I have a fascination for old objects.  I like antique maps, prints, technology, etc.

I feel strange quasi-compelling people but I wouldn't mind hearing your responses.  We're all relatively busy people.  Eh, I'll give you all a light tag.

Had a pretty decent day. Work was easy and I think my lip is starting to heal. I bit it a few weeks ago while eating a salad and really hurt it. It swelled up to about twice the normal size and it was terrible. Went to my doctor and got some medicines that are working. I look less like a circus freak now thank goodness. absynthe666 thinks it's funny because it looks like someone punched me in my mouth. (Cause I'm a bigmouth!) Therefore...no more salads for me. Heath food? Nonsense! Actually I've been trying to eat them more because this office has me like a little lump at a desk for half the day. To retaliate, I bought an elliptical machine this week and will assemble it when I have a little bit of free time. I want to use it 30 minutes a day every other day. The grad student and I went out for dinner tonight (had Italian), walked the streets of Little Italy smoking cigarettes, and then went back to her house for tea.

In other news, I've been re-watching my James Bond movies. I like the old Connery ones. The best in the series are the first four (Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, and Thunderball). They have the most memorable characters, plots, settings, soundtracks - everything. I'm kinda surprised that the new Bond movie is going to be based on the first Bond novel that Ian Fleming wrote. If I recall, Casino Royale didn't have a ton of action. (There was a very early television version of this book as well as a spoof of it featuring David Niven, Peter Sellers, and Orson Welles.) I read it about five years ago and with the advent of the new film, I might read it again.

absynthe666 and I watched one of my favorite vampire films on Friday - "Martin." The film is an offbeat horror flick about a nerdy guy who may or may not be a vampire. It features a really funny supporting character who dresses like Col. Sanders and constantly shouts "Nosferatu!" at the title character. The director plays a small role as the local priest.

Yesterday, we went down to our favorite watering hole and hung out with one of our old acquaintences from Ellicott City. After our friend went home, my ever dutiful legal-secretary-to-be and I took our bartenders with us to my family's restaurant.

One of my friends had a big victory in a civil case so we went out on Friday to celebrate. It was a blast. Earlier that day, I went to Annapolis to visit some former co-workers and I brought along a buddy from the office who knows them. After the contingency fee party I went down to our restaurant and met up with absynthe666 who was feeling bored. We bs'ed a bit and she watched Deadwood episodes while I fell asleep.

Saturday I went with the grad student to her exhibition of taxidermy at a local museum. She's moving to go to her graduate school in August. To be honest, she's a bit of a coldfish. Afterwards, I did some banking and then went to meet up again with her and some mutual friends who just bought a house downtown. Later that night I called absynthe666. She and I suddenly became very thirsty. We decided to promptly rememdy the situation with cocktails. Her boyfriend tagged along this time and it was fun. This bar we frequent is great. It's clean, the service is prompt, the drinks are strong, and they play new wave. It even has a gangster decor!

Today, I relaxed. I went down to the harbor and saw all of these old clipper ships they're showing off in the harbor. Many of them come from different countries and they look really neat. I also treated myself to a noodle bowl while there. Got a nice call from an old friend who moved to San Francisco. It's nice to catch up with the handful of people you knew from back in college. I have three friends who've known me since college and one friend from high school. Considering a lot of people I know don't have any friends from their days of education, I feel fortunate to have them.

On Saturday, absynthe666 and I went out and got ripped! Then we stumbled across the streets of the city and acted obnoxious. On Sunday, we watched Sopranos.

Today I worked and went to my school's end of semester party. I ducked out quick because I wasn't feeling it. People started getting on my nerves. Not that I dislike them or anything, I just felt like I couldn't relate with them. I realized that most of these folks don't want to be trial attorneys. Oh well, more work for me I suppose. It takes a special breed of person to want to be a trial lawyer, you need moxie.

This has been a really busy week. I had a ton of presentations, projects, and work to do.

Thursday we had a block party for our last day of classes and a group of us decided to party from 11am to 11pm. We took the party with us and went to various taverns when the official party ended. It was a good way to start the weekend.

Took the grad student out for Greek food last night. It was a good meal. I met up with absynthe666 afterward around 1 AM and we hung out at the cafe and then at her apartment until nearly 5 AM. She has these funny adult swim videos. You know, I really respect her (more than most people I know). She stands up for herself and stays true to herself in spite of the occasional difficulty in life.

I want the second season of Deadwood when it comes out in May. I'm thinking about buying a treadmill. That way, bad weather doesn't effect my exercising.

As seen in [info]kennit's journal. I kinda fancy this description.

You scored as Dante Alighieri. According to you most of humanity will spend at least some of their afterlife in hell. You have a high likelihood of being exiled, but anyone as bloody fucking romantic as you deserves what they get. You have an exceptional moral code, overshadowed by the fact that you yourself cannot uphold it.

Your existence bears a definite irony, although of fairly Christian morality, many pagans, satanists, communists, and intellectuals admire you and your works for all the wrong reasons.

Also, the brighest star in your sky is never going to be your lover...

It takes a lot of grief to be the cartographer of hell.

We can also raise money for her so she can go to school and be a partner in my firm.
